FIRES and injuries due to firecrackers and stray bullets ushered in the year 2007 in Metro Manila, according to radio reports.
In San Andres village in Manila, an eight-year-old boy, Edsel Espinosa, was hit by a stray bullet. He is being treated at the Ospital ng Maynila along with five others who were injured due to firecrackers, radio station dzBB reported.
At the Diosdado Macapagal Memorial Hospital in the municipality of Navotas, 14 people were being treated for firecracker-related injuries, another report on the same station said.
In Moonwalk village in Las PiƱas, a "kwitis" or rocket hit the roof of a church, setting it on fire. The blaze spread quickly since parts of the building was made of "sawali" (woven bamboo) another report said.
Firefighters have been dispatched to the Greater Fairview village in Quezon City's Fairview district, to contain a fire at a residential area.
The Department of Health (DoH) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are set to release official casualty figures at a news conference in Manila late Monday morning.
In 2005, three people died while 610 others were injured due to firecrackers and stray bullets from December 21, 2005 to January 1, 2006, data from the DoH showed.
One of the fatalities was a six-year old girl from Cavite City who was hit by a stray bullet while the two others were poisoned after ingesting "watusi" or dancing firecrackers.
