AN ALLEGED pirate chieftain and one of his men were killed in a clash with government forces in the southern province of Zamboanga del Sur, a spokesman for the Philippine Army said Thursday.
Suspected pirate head Camel Lao, alias Ruben, and one of his cohorts, Gumbang Gandawali, were killed in the Tuesday afternoon firefight in Dalapang village, Labangan town after patrolling troops of the 53rd Infantry Battalion intercepted them, said Major Ernesto Torres.
The rest of Lao's group escaped following the 10-minute gun battle that started at 3:45 p.m., Torres said in a statement.
A .45-caliber pistol, a .38-caliber revolver, dried marijuana and "shabu" paraphernalia were recovered from the group, he said.
Meanwhile, a woman fighter of the New People's Army (NPA) was captured by troops from the First Special Forces Company in the subvillage of Riverside, Binahaan village, Pagbilao town, Quezon province at around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, Torres said.
The communist rebel, identified as Leah Moreno alias Juvel, was brought to a nearby Army detachment for debriefing.
